ALBION, Mich. – The Trine University baseball team came up on the wrong side of an extra inning affair at Albion College and fell to the Britons in game two. The Thunder (8-28, 4-13 MIAA) were led by
Nathan Gilmet and
Cole Temple with a pair of hits on the day. Albion moves to 20-16 (8-9 MIAA).
Trine took a 4-0 lead in game one backed by a three run second inning.
Sam Beckham drove in the first two runs after reaching base on an error by the Britons defense.
Luke Metzler plated Beckham two at bats later with a flyout to right field.
Will Gimbel kept the Britons offense at bay with a solid outing, the senior faced no more than four batters in six of his seven innings and held the hosts scoreless through five.
Metzler extended the lead with an RBI single that scored Beckham once more. Albion quickly tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. The game remained tied until the bottom of the tenth when the Britons walked it off with an RBI single to win 5-4.
The momentum stuck with the hosts in game two, specifically from the pitcher's mound, Albion's Brendan Schultz allowed a hit on his first pitch of the game and would not allow another baserunner through the rest of the seven-inning contest, striking out 11 Thunder.
Luke Burford earned the hit in the 6-0 loss.
Trine hosts Albion tomorrow to close the series. With today's losses, the Thunder are eliminated from MIAA Tournament contention.
