Thunder Out Maneuvered by Britons

ALBION, Mich. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team finished the regular season at Albion College, falling 13-4 to their hosts. With the loss the team will enter the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) as the fourth-seeded team.

The Thunder opened the scoring in the first minute of play. Connor Ballantyne had the goal with Vin Pantano adding an assist. The next nine minutes were characterized by amazing play by the Trine defense, led by Luke Arnold in goal. The junior made some spectacular saves, sometimes multiple in the same possession.

Eventually the Britons did get it by the defense and went on a scoring run. They netted the next five goals during a span beginning with six minutes left in the first and ending at the midpoint of the second. During the stretch, the team's took an unexpected break when lightning struck within eight miles of the stadium, forcing a 40 minute delay.

After the streak, Pantano cut the lead back to three in the final minutes of the half, with Chris Molnar adding an assist. The home side responded in the final minute to make the score 6-2 at the half.

The Britons made the lead five early in the third quarter, before Mitchell Voglewede scored in transition. It ended up being the only goal for the Thunder in the third, with Albion scoring the two more to take a 9-3 lead into the final period.

Molnar and Pantano combined for the final Thunder goal, but the Britons scored four more for the final 13-4 score.

Arnold finished the game having been credited with eight saves. Three members of the team had multiple caused turnovers to add to the defensive effort. J'Oshua Shaw led the team with three while both Voglewede and Mason Levin had two. Levin and Shaw led the team with four groundballs each.

The Thunder finish the day 13-4 overall and 3-3 in MIAA play. Those marks are good enough to finish fourth in the final conference standings. That position earns the team a home first round playoff game on Saturday, April 25. They will host Kalamazoo College at 1 p.m.
