Thunder Avoid Rain to Sweep Belles

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University softball team picked up two more wins with a sweep of Saint Mary's College. The doubleheader was originally set to be hosted by the Belles, but weather forced both multiple schedule changes and the Thunder to serve as hosts.

Trine opened the days as visitors on the scoreboard, but it didn't stop them from an offensive explosion and a 17-2 run-rule victory. The first two innings were scoreless, before the Thunder posted nine runs in the third. The first six runs came off homers, one each for Natalie Summers, Karley Trine and Macy Rocha. Each long ball came with an extra RBI to reach the six run leave. Mylee Boling singled for the next run before Summers came up with a double in her second at-bat of the inning for the eight. Whitney Duell finished the scoring in the inning with a single through the middle.

The fourth inning saw the team add five more runs to their total. Abbie Geib had a three-run double to start the scoring before Boling had a two-run homer for the other two.

Through the first three innings Kami Arnett held down the circle with efficiency. She allowed the first two Belles to reach in the fourth before exiting the game. She still finished the day with three strikeouts while allowing two runs on three hits. Debbie Hill finished the final two innings and allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two.

After the two runs against them in the fourth, the Thunder finished the game in the fifth with three more of their own. Hill and Emma Lee brought in the runs with a homer each making the score 17-2. All told six different members of the team had home runs in the contest.

It looked like the second game would follow the same script, with Trine scoring six runs over the first two innings to build a 6-0 lead. Hill brought in the first two with a single, before Lee brought in another on a triple and scored herself on a passed ball. Marcum and Rocha each had an RBI in the second to build the lead.

Sydney Adolfson pitched the game for the Thunder. She went six innings allowing three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four. She allowed one run in the fourth and two in the sixth. Alex Rodriguez took over for the final inning and earned a save with a strikeout and one walk as the game ended 6-3.

Trine finishes the day 21-1 overall and 6-0 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. They are scheduled to next take the field when they host Albion College on Saturday, April 18. That doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
