Baseball Bested By Comets

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University baseball team fell to The University of Olivet in the final game of the teams' MIAA midweek series. The Comets (14-13, 6-6 MIAA) took the win on Jannen Field, 9-6 over the Thunder (8-23, 4-8 MIAA). Cole Schmidthuber came up a triple shy of the cycle to lead the Thunder.

Cole Temple, Justin Hamberg, and Luke Metzler each had a pair of hits. Metzler recorded his first two career hits, a single in the fourth and a double in the eighth. The freshman also made a pair of great throws in the outfield that prevented scoring plays from the Comets.

Olivet scored four runs in the fourth to open the scoring. Metzler responded with his first career hit, an RBI single that drove in Nathan Gilmet to cut the deficit to 4-1. The Comets responded with four more runs in the fifth with two outs on the board to build an 8-1 advantage. Schmidthuber checked the home run off the list in his quest for the cycle in the fifth. A two-run blast to left field brought in Hamberg and trimmed the deficit to 8-3.

Caden Hufnagle picked off a runner at first and then struck out another in the sixth to prevent more runs from the Comets. The Thunder added three more runs in the home half. Metzler added another RBI with a sacrifice hit that scored Cole Temple. Justin Hamberg doubled down the left field line to put two runs in scoring position. Schmidthuber plated both runs with a nearly identical hit.

Olivet added an insurance run in the seventh to lead 9-6. Trine had the winning run at the plate in the ninth with two outs, Metzler was unfazed by the moment and went down swinging.

The Thunder travel to Adrian College on Friday afternoon to open their series against the Bulldogs.
