KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team road strong first and third periods to a 14-5 victory against Kalamazoo College. Mitchell Voglewede led the way offensively with five goals.
The Thunder scored five goals to start the game with Voglewede accounting for three of them. Vin Pantano and Justin Johnson had the others. Connor Ballantyne set up two of the goals with J'Oshua Shaw adding another assist. The team took that 5-0 lead into the second quarter.
The Hornets cut into the deficit by outscoring Trine 3-1 in the second quarter, making the tally 6-3 at halftime. Rocco Curatola scored the goal for the Thunder with Pantano adding an assist.
Six more goals went on the board for Trine in the third quarter, giving the team a commanding 12-3 lead. Ballantyne scored the first before Voglewede sandwiched Curatola for the next three. Kramer Zastrow and Landen Kruse added their first points of the day to round out the quarter. Pantano, Ballantyne, Curatola and Danny Kelly each had assists.
Kalamazoo scored the first two goals of the fourth, but the Thunder matched them to finish the game with the 14-5 victory. Johnson scored the first for Trine in the period, before Alec Jankowski won the next faceoff and made a pass to Riley Fischer who scored the second. The two goals came just eight seconds apart.
Voglewede's five goals led the team for both that category and points. Ballantyne finished second on the team with four points while leading the way with three assists. Curatola and Pantano both had three points in the game.
Five different members of the Thunder had multiple caused turnovers. Eiji Minobe led the way with three. Mason Levin, Justin Scheberle, Kelly and Shaw each had a pair. Scheberle led the way with six groundballs, with Shaw, Levin and Voglewede finishing second with four each.
Luke Arnold picked up the win in goal, finishing with eight saves while allowing just three goals. He played the first 43 minutes of the game. Zade Gawrys played just under a quarter of the game and made two saves while allowing the final two goals. Evan Dobyns finished out the game.
Trine improves to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play after the win. They will enjoy a midweek bye from conference competition before hosting Alma College on Friday, April 17. That penultimate game of the regular season is set to start at 7 p.m.
