Baseball Hammers Yellow Jackets, Bearcats

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Trine University baseball team posted a pair of convincing wins on Wednesday afternoon in the Sunshine State. Trine (4-6) took down Waynesburg University (Pa.) (7-3) 13-3 and Saint Vincent College (Pa.) (1-4) 19-5 in a pair of run rule victories. Trine racked up 31 hits on the day and hit .484 on the day. The Thunder have now registered double digit hits in five of their ten games this season.
 
Trine set two program records in the wins and two other top-10 game marks. Against Waynesburg, the Thunder tallied four triples, the most in a single game in program history. In the second game, the Thunder notched seven doubles, tying the program record for a single game. The 19 runs in game two are the seventh most in a single game and the 16 runs batted in are the tenth most in a single game.
 
The Thunder belted out 14 hits in game one with William Taczak, Kai Jones, Cole Temple, and Cole Schmidthuber notching the triples. Temple recorded seven bases on two hits in the game adding a 3 RBI homer in the sixth to his fifth inning triple. Luke Burford and Kai Jones led the offense with three hits each, Burford had 4 RBIs.
 
Dylan Jenkins went the distance on the mound, allowing just three hits and two earned runs in seven innings of work. He added three strikeouts to his winning performance.
 
The Thunder struck in the second inning with five runs. Justin Hamberg drove in the first run and Burford, the next two. Taczak had the first triple in the next at bat that scored Burford. Jones singled to score Taczak. Temple's fifth inning triple scored Jones who reached base on a triple of his own.
 
Trine tacked on six more in the sixth, Burford added an RBI single and Jones a three RBI base hit. Temple then blasted a three run shot over the left field fence for his fourth long ball of the year. Trine wrapped up the win in the bottom of the seventh with a sac fly from Burford that scored Schmidthuber who recorded the fourth triple.
 
Joseph Closson got the win against Saint Vincent in a bullpen game. The offense backed up the pitching with 19 runs in six innings. Trine scored seven runs on their seven doubles in the game. Brody Bond led with three hits and one double, Kai Jones tallied three RBIs.
 
Trine scored three in the first and upped the ante in the second with five more. Burford, Temple, and Bond drove in runs with doubles in the first two innings. The third inning was the only inning Trine did not score in the second game. Trine added three more in fourth and four in the fifth and sixth. Kai Jones doubled in the fifth to score two runs.
 
Trine is off tomorrow before concluding their Florida trip with games against Bluffton University and John Carroll University.
