AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Trine University baseball team concluded its spring break trip to the Sunshine State on Friday afternoon. Trine (4-7) fell to Bluffton University 4-5) in the first game by a score of 8-4. In the second game the Thunder lost to John Carroll University (7-2) 4-3 in walk off fashion.
Luke Burford led Trine with three hits,
Brody Bond and
Justin Hamberg drove in the runs for the Thunder. Hamberg brought in two in the second with a single,
Cole Temple and
Jaden Kostura scored. The Beavers tied the game in the bottom of the inning and built a 5-2 lead in the seventh. Bond cut the lead to one in the eighth, driving in two runs with help from the Beavers defense. Bluffton would tack on three more runs while keeping Trine off the board in the ninth to secure the win.
Will Gimbel was excellent in game two allowing three hits in eight innings and striking out three.
William Taczak had three hits and two RBIs in the game. The first came in the third inning on a sac fly and the second in the fifth inning. Gimbel maintained the shutout, only allowing baserunners in the fourth and sixth innings. Trine made it 3-0 with a sac fly from
Kai Jones in the ninth. The bats came alive in the ninth for the Blue Streaks with three hits on four runs off of
Caden Hufnagle to take the win.
Trine returns to action on Saturday, March 14 in its home opener against Manchester University.
