ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University baseball team battled back from a pair of 5-0 deficits on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell twice to the 20
th-ranked Kalamazoo College Hornets. K-Zoo (18-2, 2-0 MIAA) claimed game one 7-5 and game two 14-6.
Cole Schmidthuber led the Thunder (4-17, 0-2 MIAA) with four hits on the day.
Trine fell behind 5-0 in the third inning of game one before erasing the deficit over the next three innings.
Spencer Rodriguez got Trine on the board, scoring on an error by the Hornets' catcher.
Brody Bond scored later on a fielder's choice.
William Taczak drove in Schmidthuber with an RBI in the fifth and Schmidthuber added a 2 RBI single to level things at five. The score held until the ninth when the Hornets scored a pair on a home run to left field. Burford recorded his 100
th career hit in the game.
Trine once again trailed 5-0 after the third inning in game two. This time the Thunder would have to wait until the fifth inning to respond. The Thunder would respond in a big way, churning out six hits and six runs with two outs to take a 6-5 lead. Schmidthuber opened the scoring with an RBI double and would score in a single from Burford in the next at bat.
Kai Jones added an RBI single that plated Burford. Bond, who made the start at pitcher, would blast a three-run homer to give Trine their first lead of the day. The Hornets showed their national prowess over the final four innings and pulled away for the win.
The two teams will meet tomorrow afternoon in Kalamazoo to close out the series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
