ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team secured their seventh win of the season with an 11-3 victory over visiting Edgewood University.
In a day when they would be honored following the contest, seniors made a huge mark on the contest. Will Gonia led the offense with four goals while Danny Kelly finished the game with four caused turnovers. Kelly also paced the team with four groundballs.
Representing the underclassmen was Rocco Curatola who finished with a team high five points including four assists and one goal. He was also tied for first with four groundballs and second with three caused turnovers. Vin Pantano joined him by finishing third on the team with three points, two assists and a goal.
Another senior, Mitchell Voglewede opened the scoring in the contest. He scored with just seconds under nine minutes remaining in the first quarter. JJ Boos and Gonia each added a goal to build the lead to 3-0. A last second shot by the Eagles made the score 3-1 after one.
Curatola caused a turnover near midfield and then scored on his own to start the second quarter. Connor Ballantyne, Nick Fariello, Pantano and Gonia each added another to build an 8-2 lead for halftime.
Gonia scored twice more in the second half with Kramer Zastrow adding another to finish the game with the 11-3 victory.
In goal, another senior made the start. Zade Gawrys played all but the final six minutes of the game, earning the win while recording five saves. Luke Arnold entered for the final minutes and made one more save for the team.
Alec Jankowski led the team by going six-for-seven on the faceoff. Fariello was just behind him going five-for-seven.
The Thunder end the day 7-1. The team will next take the field when they travel to face Hanover College on Wednesday, March 18. That game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
