CHICAGO – The Trine University men's volleyball team completed its trip to the Windy City on Saturday with a 3-1 win over North Park University. Trine (11-8) won in gentlemen's sweep fashion, allowing the Vikings (1-19) to take the first set before dominating the final three.
Trine took the match 21-25, 25-19, 25-11, and 25-19.
Johnson-Kuhao Ho'okano-Pelekai and
Zach Mikrut led the offense with 13 kills each with Mikrut hitting .407.
Karl Both added 2.5 blocks.
North Park drilled 17 kills in set one behind a .400 hitting mark. North Park took a 2-1 lead and then scored their next 10 points by kill. Trine kept it close with six of their own and an ace. NPU closed the set with six kills and an ace over their final seven points to take the win.
Trine hit .324 in the second set with
Zach Mikrut and
Johnson-Kuhao Ho'okano-Pelekai leading the way with four kills each. Ho'okano-Pelekai teamed up with
Karl Both for a block to clinch the set for Trine. Trine led nearly the entire set and used an 8-1 run late in the set to take a 22-14 lead.
Trine dominated the third set, winning 25-11. Three kills from
Zach Mikrut and two from
John Mikrut and
Johnson-Kuhao Ho'okano-Pelekai were bolstered by a bevy of errors from the Vikings to help Trine to the win.
The Thunder turned a slim 11-10 advantage into a commanding 21-12 lead with two swings each from
Zach Mikrut and Ho'okano-Pelekai. Both and
John Mikrut added aces to help Trine take the win.
