WATERTOWN, Wisc. – The Trine University men's volleyball team returned from a more than two week hiatus with a convincing three set win over Maranatha Baptist on Friday night. Trine (10-8, 2-1 MCVL) nailed 10 aces and 42 kills on the night to power past the Sabercats (0-17).
John Mikrut led Trine with eight kills and a pair of aces while
Ty Freeman was excellent on the serve with a trio of aces. Trine took the match 25-20, 25-15, 25-19
Trine used a 9-4 run to pull away from MBU in the first set.
Bryce Tupaz had a pair of aces and
Chase Emberton added two kills.
Zach Mikrut put the set away with an ace.
Trine hit .333 in the second set and wasted little time building an insurmountable lead, scoring the first eight points, Mikrut heated up with three of his kills and Freeman served all eight points and had two aces. Trine led by as many as 13 before claiming the win.
MBU returned the favor in the third set, scoring the first five points. The Thunder quickly rallied to a 12-9 lead with help from
Austin Pflunger. He had three kills and an ace. Pflunger and
Ryan Ford each added two more swings to help Trine clinch the sweep.
Trine is back in action tomorrow afternoon at North Park University. The match is set for a first serve at 4:00 p.m.
