Baseball Picks Up First Win in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Trine University baseball team picked up its first win of the season with a 7-6 decision over Chatham University on Saturday. Gunner Willey got the win for the Thunder (1-3) and Caden Hufnagle got the save as Trine dealt Chatham (4-1) its first loss.
 
Trine pounded out eight hits in the win, William Taczak, Cole Temple, and Cole Schmidthuber each had a pair. Temple drove in three runs thanks in part to a sixth inning home run.
 
Chatham struck first in the second inning with a run on a fielder's choice. The score held until the fifth inning when Trine scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch. Nathan Gilmet notched a 2 RBI single in the next at bat to push Trine's lead to 3-1. Temple led off the sixth with his solo shot to left field.
 
The Cougars roared back in the sixth with three runs to tie the game at four. Temple added another RBI that scored Taczak. Willey protected the lead with a strike out. The teams traded blows once more in the eighth, Trine went first with a pair of RBI walks. Trine earned four free bases in the inning, two by walk and two on hit batters. Spencer Rodriquez and Temple got the RBIs. Chatham scored two on a single through the middle but Trine ended the inning with a fly out. Both teams went three up and three down in the ninth and Trine tallied its first win.
 
The Thunder continue their Florida trip tomorrow with a double header against Saint Mary's (Minn.)
