Baseball Splits with Saint Mary's (Minn.)

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Trine University baseball team split a pair of seven inning games against Saint Mary's (Minn.) this afternoon. Trine (2-4) took the second game and the Cardinals (3-2) took game one.
 
Saint Mary's scored eight runs in the seventh to take an 11-8 win in the first game. Will Gimbel allowed one run in six innings of work with three strikeouts. Trine scored four runs in the second inning to build an early lead. Cole Schmidthuber, Luke Burford, William Taczak, and Nathan Gilmet drove in the runs. The Cardinals trimmed the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs but Trine answered with a pair of runs in the bottom on an error. Kyle Martin hit a sac fly in the sixth to add another and Cole Temple blasted his third homer of the young season. In six games, Temple has three home runs, all solo shots. The Cardinals would tally eight runs in the final inning to steal the win.
 
Trine took the second game 5-3, striking early and allowing just seven hits to take the win. Owen Mitchell got credit with 4.1 innings of work and three Ks. Caden Hufnagle earned his second save of the year. Like game one, Trine built an early lead. Temple scored Brody Bond on an RBI single in the first, Taczak and Tyler Wise drove in runs in the second inning to push the lead to 4-0.  Wise picked up his third RBI in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1. Saint Mary's added two runs in the sixth but Hufnagle struck out the last two Cardinals to close out the win.
 
Trine returns to action at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow when they take on Wentworth Institute of Technology.
