FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Trine University women's hockey team struggled in the first game of their series against Marian University. The late night contest went to the home side by the score of 3-0.
Neither team scored in the first period or most of the second. With just under three minutes remaining before the final intermission, the Sabres took the lead. Claire Schmaltz made the initial save on the breakaway chance, but the rebound got away from her and allowed the goal.
Marian scored twice more in the third period to build the final 3-0 lead. They also killed off three power play chances for the Thunder during the final two periods to keep the shutout intact.
Trine finished with 20 shots on goal, five of them coming from Sydney Streb. Schmaltz finished the game with 23 saves.
