Women's Basketball Earns Program Record 31st Consecutive MIAA Win

ANGOLA, Ind. – The 20th ranked Trine University women's basketball team earned a program record 31st consecutive MIAA win on Saturday behind a dominant second half performance. The win is Trine's (19-3, 13-0 MIAA) 13th straight and clinches a first round bye in the MIAA Tournament. Adrian falls to 8-14 (4-9 MIAA).

Trine's 31 MIAA victories date back to the 2023-24 season when the Thunder won their final two conference matchups and include all of last season's perfect 16-0 mark; the second undefeated MIAA slate in program history. Trine now sets its sights on Hope's MIAA record 37-game winning streak from 2019-2022.

Ally Capouch led Trine with 16 points and seven rebounds. Madison Wagner added 12 points and freshman Sophie Gesell continued her impressive stretch of games with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Trine shook off a slow start with help from Gracey Metz, the senior nailed a three and then turned three steals into six points. The first steal found Gesell for a layup and started an 18-5 run to close the quarter. Metz and Wagner opened it up with triples then Metz swiped a pair of steals and took each the distance for a layup. Wagner was fouled on a buzzer beater attempt and sunk all three shots from the stripe.

The Bulldogs barked back in the second quarter, outscoring the hosts 18-14 and ultimately tying the game. Capouch hit her second three to try and ward off a small run by the Bulldogs. It was to no avail as Adrian chipped away to tie the game at 27 with 3:11 left. Trine scored the final seven of the quarter to gain some breathing room by halftime.

Adrian matched Trine's first seven points of the second half before the Thunder gained momentum. A pair of buckets from Wagner and one from Metz pushed the lead to 11 and Zoe Willems made it a dozen with a free throw in the final seconds.

Trine quickly extended the 48-36 lead to 55-39 and erased the hope of a comeback from their guests. Capouch made her fourth and final long ball to open the frame and the Thunder added two more baskets in the paint. Triples from Annika Southworth and Olivia Marks pushed the lead to 24 as the Thunder pulled away late for the win.

Trine heads to Saint Mary's on Wednesday night and can clinch a share of the MIAA Regular Season Championship with a win.
