NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 20
th ranked Trine University women's basketball team claimed a share of its second consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Regular Season Championship with an 88-40 victory over Saint Mary's College on Wednesday night.
Madison Wagner led Trine (20-3, 14-0 MIAA) with 17 points, the Belles fall to 7-15 (2-11) MIAA with the loss.
The win marks Trine's 14
th consecutive win, 32
nd consecutive MIAA win, and fifth consecutive season with at least 20 wins. This marks the seventh time in program history that the Thunder will at least share the MIAA title, all in the last 10 seasons.
A tight first quarter early on swung the way of the Thunder when Wagner and
Annika Southworth made three pointers to open up a 15-8 lead. Southworth scored 11 on the night.
Zoe Willems and
Sophie Gesell added three points each to put the Thunder ahead 16-10 after one.
Trine blew the game open in the second quarter with a 23-8 advantage in the second quarter. Trine scored the first nine points via three pointer.
Ally Capouch made a pair and
Sara Parkison connected on the third and continued the 10-0 run with a free throw. Wagner scored seven in a row to push the lead to 17 and Southworth added the last four to take a 39-18 lead at the half.
Trine scored the first 13 points of the third quarter to push the lead to 34. Wagner wrapped up her high scoring outing with five more points and Parkison crossed double digits for the first time in her career.
Emma Payton scored seven points in the final three minutes. Every player dressed saw action in the game.
Trine hosts Calvin on Saturday for Senior Day. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m., a win or Hope loss on Saturday would clinch the outright MIAA Regular Season Title and #1 seed in the MIAA Tournament.
