ALBION, Mich. –
Madison Wagner scored 16 points, and the 20
th ranked Trine University women's basketball team scored its 30
th consecutive MIAA win in a 69-37 thrashing of Albion College on Wednesday evening. The Thunder (18-3, 12-0 MIAA) opened an 18-5 lead after one quarter and rolled to a 32-point victory over the Britons (14-6, 7-4 MIAA). Trine clinches a home game in the MIAA Tournament with the win and can secure a first round bye with a win on Saturday or a loss by Albion.
Wagner was joined in double figures by
Sophie Gesell who added a career-high 12 points.
Hailey Cole and
Olivia Marks had near double-doubles; Cole had nine points and eight rebounds; Marks had nine points and seven rebounds.
Trine opened an 11-2 lead in the games first seven minutes and never trailed. Cole scored first, just 18 seconds in.
Annika Southworth and
Callie Nichols added layups and Wagner bolstered the advantage with a triple. Gesell pushed the lead to 14-3 when she stepped behind the line for a bucket.
The Thunder forced 18 turnovers on the night, five coming in the second quarter to help build a 36-15 halftime advantage. Marks scored five of her nine in the second frame and
Ally Capouch knocked down a three pointer. Trine held the Britons scoreless over the final 3:41 of the half.
The third quarter was evenly matched as neither team could build a run, Trine grabbed 15 of their 42 rebounds in the quarter and held a 42-37 advantage on the glass for the game. Gesell converted an and-one and Wagner knocked in her second long ball.
The Thunder regained momentum in the fourth quarter, scoring the first seven points and outscoring the Britons 17-7 in the frame. Albion's 37 points are a season low and come a week after they upset #13 Hope, 60-54.
Trine will go for a program record 31
st consecutive MIAA win on Saturday when they host Adrian College at 3:00 p.m.
