Ho'okno-Pelekai Swings Thunder Past Bulldogs

ANGOLA, Ind. – Johnson-Kuhao Ho'okano-Pelekai drilled 23 kills in the Trine University men's volleyball team's four set victory over Adrian College on Wednesday evening inside Hershey Hall. Trine (9-8, 2-1 MCVL) took the first two sets and the fourth to claim the win over the Bulldogs (4-9, 1-3 MCVL).

Karl Both tallied 12 kills on .471 hitting and seven blocks. Xander Ikusz dished out 47 assists. The Thunder hit .321 for the match, their second-best mark of the season.

Trine took a back and forth set one with the final four points, neither team led by more than two points for most of the set until the Thunder broke a 21 all tie with the set's final four points. John Mikrut had four kills while Both and Ho'okano-Pelekai had three each and teamed up for the block to take the set.

Trine broke set two wide open with a 9-2 run to stretch a 13-9 lead to 22-11. Ho'okano-Pelekai punched six kills in the win.

The Bulldogs barked back in set three, rallying from an 18-14 deficit to steal set three 25-23 despite nine spikes from Ho'okano-Pelekai.

Trine grabbed a 5-1 lead early in set four but were quickly answered with a 7-1 run by the guests. The back and forth continued, Ho'okano-Pelekai added two more swings and an ace, Both added two swings of his own and John and Zach Mikrut added one each to give Trine a 15-10 lead. Adrian pulled within striking distance once more with a 4-0 run to trail 17-16. They would get no closer, the kills came in pairs from there for Trine with Ho'okano-Pelekai and each Mikrut brother punctuating the win.

Trine is off until March 13th when they head to Maranatha Baptist University for a match with the Sabercats.
