ADRIAN, Mich. – The Trine University women's hockey team was overpowered by their nationally ranked hosts from Adrian College. The opening game of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Slaats Cup Playoffs ended 9-0 in favor of the home team.
After scoring in the first minute of play, the Bulldogs tallied just one more goal in the first period. They went on to score five in the second, before adding their final two in the third for the 9-0 win.
Emma-Lyn Stephenson led the Thunder with three shots on goal. Aleah Bienek paced the team in the circle with 18 faceoff wins and just eight losses. Claire Schmaltz made 27 saves in the contest and Abby Hargrave-Thomas had 15.
Trine falls to 7-17-2 overall after the loss. They will face off with Adrian again tomorrow, Saturday, February 21. That game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. with a mini-game to follow if the Thunder can force it.
