SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Trine University men's lacrosse team opened the season with a 15-9 come from behind victory over their hosts from Wittenberg University. Mitchell Voglewede led the Thunder with four goals in the game.
The Tigers scored the only two goals of the first period, the first coming just over two minutes into the contest. They took the 2-0 lead into the second quarter.
Trine scored the next five goals, four of them coming in the first five minutes of the second. Connor Ballantyne was the first goalscorer of the season followed in order by Landen Kruse, Xavier Huber and Vin Pantano. Kruse doubled his tally to finish the five-goal streak for the team. After one more goal for Wittenberg, the Thunder held a 5-3 lead for halftime.
Voglewede opened the second half with his first two goals of the season. He scored twice in the first six minutes of the second half with JJ Boos adding a third to build the team's lead to 8-3. Rocco Curatola responded to a Tigers goal to keep the deficit intact with a 9-4 score at the end of the quarter.
After Wittenberg opened the fourth, Voglewede and Ballantyne each scored a pair to build the Thunder's largest lead of the day at 13-5. The Tigers won the last six minutes of the game 4-2, but the final was in favor of the visitors at 15-9. Huber and Boos finished the scoring for the team.
Luke Arnold played the game in net for the Thunder and finished the game with 11 saves and the win.
Trine will return home for their next game, hosting Carroll (Wis.) University on Saturday, February 21. The game is set to begin at noon.
