Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Season Starts with Tie for Women's Hockey

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's hockey team opened the season with a come from behind tie, ending 65 minutes of play against SUNY Morrisville with two goals each. The Mustangs took the shootout 2-0.

A costly turnover in the defensive zone gave Morrisville their first goal in the opening minute of the season.

The score lasted for seven minutes before the Thunder responded. Sofia Koppa won a faceoff in the forward zone, giving the puck to Alicia Lillerskog who moved toward the high slot before firing a shot that ended up in the corner. Sydney Streb retained possession for the team passing it back to Lillerskog who made another shot at the net, this time from above the far faceoff circle. Koppa tipped it home from the slot.

The Mustangs retook the lead in the second minute of the next period, this time after a prolonged possession in the forward zone. The shot went into the top of the net from in between the circles, leaving Annie Kindseth with no chance at a save.

Trine tied the game again in the seventh minute of the third period. During a transition, Lydia Ydenberg ended up with the puck at the side of the net. She made a pass toward the crease where Chloe Downey wasn't quite ready. The junior was able to keep the puck close and Morgan Loney scooped it up and pushed it home from the near side of the net.

The 2-2 score held through the rest of regulation, despite ample opportunities by the Thunder. The team put 35 shots on goal during regulations to just 15 by the visitors. Overtime saw more of the same with Trine tallying eight more shots to just two by Morrisville. The game remained tied after the extra period.

The Mustangs won the shootout 2-0, but the game still goes down as a tie for both teams. Game two of the weekend doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, October 31.
