ANGOLA, Ind. – The 21
st ranked Trine University women's basketball team held the Alma Scots to a season low 37 points for their 11
th consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon. The win is Trine's (17-3, 11-0 MIAA) 29
th consecutive MIAA victory, one shy of tying the program record for consecutive conference wins. Alma falls to 8-11 (4-6 MIAA).
Annika Southworth led the Thunder with 14 points and five assists.
Madison Wagner and
Sophie Gesell each crossed double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Trine limited Alma to a 13-of-50 (26%) shooting performance and did not allow a field goal until the second quarter.
Ally Capouch struck quickly with a three pointer to give Trine the lead just 13 seconds into the game. The Thunder would never trail as they allowed just three first quarter points. The freshman duo of Southworth and
Callie Nichols pushed Trine to a 9-2 lead with a trio of made jumpers in the paint.
Zoe Willems extended the lead to 15-2 with a layup near the end of the first quarter.
The Scots finally connected on a field goal with 6:46 left in the second quarter to cut the Trine lead to 18-6. The Thunder responded with a 7-2 run. Nichols and Wagner made layups and Gesell earned an and-one opportunity on her made basket, which she converted. Trine led 31-13 in the closing seconds of the first half but a buzzer beater from Alma trimmed the advantage to 31-16.
Alma rode the momentum in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 12 as the Thunder battled a slow start. Southworth broke through with a triple that started an 8-0 run and put the game in hand. Wagner ended the run with her first triple of the game and added another on the ensuing possession to answer the Scots basket and Trine led 46-25.
The Thunder led by as many as 35 in the fourth quarter when
Ellianna Foley nailed her first career three pointer. Southworth added five fourth quarter points to complete her team high scoring effort.
