Women's Basketball Cruises by Hornets

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The 21st ranked Trine University women's basketball claimed it's 10th consecutive win on Wednesday night with a decisive 70-42 victory over Kalamazoo College. The win is Trine's (16-3, 10-0 MIAA) 28th straight MIAA win, the 10 game streak marks the second consecutive season the Thunder have achieved a double digit win streak. Annika Southworth and Hailey Cole scored 14 each to lead Trine past Kalamazoo (4-14, 3-6 MIAA).

Trine outscored the Hornets in each quarter and held a 38-18 advantage in the second half. Sophie Gesell finished with a career-high 11 points and Madison Wagner continued her hot streak from the three-point line, connecting on 3-of-5 shots to score all nine of her points.

Olivia Marks scored her lone point of the night to get Trine on the board first and help build a 9-2 lead. Ally Capouch scored five in the run, three coming from downtown. Kalamazoo made a pair of runs at the lead getting within two once and tying the game the second time. Both baskets were answered by paint points from Gesell.

Trine turned a 15-13 lead to a 21-13 lead early in the second quarter with four points from Cole and a bucket from Callie Nichols. The lead would stick and Trine never trailed again, building a 13-point lead behind triples from Southworth and Wagner.

Trine limited the Hornets to seven third quarter points, KZoo bookended the quarter with layups and in between was a 16-3 run from the guests. Trine scored eight in the paint and Wagner added her second long ball. Southworth and Cole added four each and Gesell had three the old-fashioned way.

The 48-31 lead swelled to 20 quickly in fourth quarter when Cole converted a three point play. Gesell and Wagner notched back-to-back triples to push the lead to two dozen and Coach Rang went in to the bench for the final two minutes.

Trine hosts Alma College on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they look to maintain firm control of the MIAA standings as Hope College was dealt their second MIAA loss tonight by Albion College.
