ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's hockey team overcame a first period deficit to secure an overtime 2-1 victory against visiting Lake Forest College. Dorka Gengeliczky played the hero scoring just ten seconds into the extra period.
The Foresters struck first in the contest, notching an ugly goal in the sixth minute of the first period. The mistake galvanized Zsuzsa Révész in net and she played inspired through the rest of the contest. She finished the contest with 29 saves, including multiple that came on breakaways and one stop on a penalty shot in the third period that preserved the tie.
The Thunder found the back of the net in the sixth minute of the second, tying the score at one. Â The goal came on the power play, with Chloe Downey keeping the puck in the offensive zone after Lake Forest briefly possessed it behind their net. She passed it back toward the near faceoff circle where Cassandra Biblow was able to forward it to the slot. From there Hannah Lambers fired her shot into the top of the net.
Neither team scored through the rest of regulation, though both teams gave the goalies plenty of work. Both teams faced the most shots in the third, with the Thunder leadin the category 15-13. Overall, in the contest Trine edged shots on goal 31-30.
There was just one shot in the overtime period. Aleah Bienek won the opening faceoff back to Gengeliczky who went around the near side of the faceoff circle and streaked up the ice. She fired a shot from the near faceoff circle that seemed to be saved, but somehow sneaked through and into the goal.
Trine improves to 6-10-2 overall and 2-8-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They will look to win a second game against Lake Forest tomorrow, Saturday, January 24. That game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
