#25 Thunder Complete Improbable Comeback at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The #25 Trine University women's basketball team scored its 26th consecutive MIAA victory in unique fashion on Wednesday night. The Thunder scored just one point in the first quarter but scored 45 over the final three to come from behind and beat Calvin University 46-40. Madison Wagner led Trine (14-3, 8-0 MIAA) with 12 points to help send Calvin to 9-8 overall, 4-4 MIAA.

Annika Southworth scored eight points to go with nine rebounds and Zoe Willems also tallied eight points.

Calvin took a 15-0 lead in the first quarter as the Thunder seemingly had a lid on their basket, shooting 0-of-11 in the first frame. Sophie Gesell broke through with a free throw to get Trine on the board before the second quarter.

The clock had rolled past the halfway point in the second quarter before Trine scored again. Callie Nichols finally made a field goal with a fast break layup and broke the ice for Trine. The next three shots went down for Trine and Wagner converted the and-one on the third to get Trine within 11 at halftime.

Calvin still held momentum out of the locker room, scoring five of the first six to take a 26-12 lead with 5:50 remaining in the third. Southworth dropped in a jumper that kick started an epic rally to preserve the second longest conference winning streak in program history.

Wagner made Trine's first three pointer of the game a few possessions later and then found Willems for a layup. The next trip down the floor it was Willems again scoring inside and trimming the Calvin lead to 26-22. Gracey Metz and Nichols each made a jumper and Trine had come all the way back to trail by one heading to the final quarter.

Southworth struck first in the final frame to give Trine it's first lead of the ball game. The teams swapped baskets and were tied at 31 when Olivia Marks earned a trip to the free throw line. She nailed the pair and gave Trine the lead for good. Wagner and Southworth turned a 33-32 lead to a 39-32 lead with back-to-back three pointers to give the Thunder some breathing room. Trine scored four points in the paint and made three free throws to close out an impressive comeback, scoring 45 of 46 points in the final 25 minutes of game time.

Trine hosts The University of Olivet on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as they continue MIAA play.
