ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's basketball team returned to the MTI Center for the first time in over a month and came away with a 94-80 win over the Alma College Scots. Five Thunder scored in double figures and they have now won five of their last six games and are 9-4 (1-1 MIAA). The Scots fall to 2-11 (0-2 MIAA).
Elias Lewis led with 18 points,
Nate Tucker added 16 points and eight rebounds and
Logan McKenzie pitched in 15.
Jayden Bradshaw had 13 points and
Danny Flood stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
Cade Brenner was hot from the three point line, making three of four to tally 11 points and seven boards.
Trine opened the game with a 10-4 lead by the first media timeout, with Flood assisting on three of the baskets. The lead grew on the first possession out of the break.
Drew Panning elevated over the Scots defense and caught a back door alley-oop from
Elisha Jones for the jam. Alma would eventually tie the game at 16 only to be answered by the first of a couple large Thunder scoring runs. Trine scored the next 15 three at a time.
Danny Flood made the first triple, then Lewis connected on his first of four on the day. He assisted the next one as
Jayden Bradshaw found the bottom of the net. Alma called timeout to try and stop the run but Bradshaw stayed hot connecting on another and Panning closed the run with an and-one and Trine led 31-16. Alma would close the gap and trail 42-35 at the half.
Trine struck first in the second half with Tucker scoring eight of their first 10. The game rolled to the 12-minute mark with the teams trading baskets and Alma eventually cut the lead to four. Trine responded with another run, outscoring the Scots 12-2 in three minutes to push the lead to 70-56. Flood opened the run with an and-one, then Lewis dashed through the lane for a one-handed jam. Bradshaw scored five from the free throw line.
The Scots again refused to go away, scoring the next ten points. This time the Thunder had the answers, silencing the rally with a 21-6 spurt to take 91-72 lead. Tucker scored the first four, then Bradshaw got back to the free throw line for another pair.
Cade Brenner and Lewis blew the game open with a pair of three pointers. Lewis continued the momentum with the next two baskets, scoring inside and then nailing another long ball. McKenzie punctuated the run with a pair of baskets.
Trine travels to Albion on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match up against Coach
