ALBION, Mich. – The Trine University women's soccer team opened Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play on Tuesday night at Albion College with a win.
Maggie McDowell scored a 68
th minute goal for the Thunder who are now 5-1-3 (1-0 MIAA) and drop Albion to 7-3 (0-1 MIAA).
Trine limited the Britons to four shots in the contest, all coming in the first half and just two were on goal.
Madison Kinneer earned her fifth shutout on the year going the distance in the net for Trine. Trine managed 17 shots, five on target and held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Thunder earned their first corner attempt in the first minute and it resulted in a shot for
Dana Fish. Albion managed three shots in the span of a minute near the end of the first half. The second of the three was on goal but Kinneer was up to the task and turned it away.
The game was tied at nil entering the second half. Trine continued to apply pressure dominating possession and shots in the second frame. In the 68
th minute the Thunder earned a free kick from about 35 yards away from the Britons' goal.
Erin Scully took the free kick and landed it perfectly in front of the Britons' keeper,
Maggie McDowell got behind Albion's defense and got a touch before putting her shot in the bottom left corner and into the net. The Thunder defense proved just as potent after the goal, bowing up and not allowing the Britons the potential game tying shot over the final 22 minutes to earn the win.
Trine will travel to Naperville, Ill. for their final non-conference test of the season, taking on North Central (Ill.) at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4
th.
