ALMA, Mich. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team opened Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play with a convincing 23-2 victory over their hosts from Alma College.
Collin Custer led the dominating offensive performance for the team, but 14 different members of the team were involved with at least one point in the game.
The Thunder scored the first five goals of the game, with the first three coming in the opening minutes of the game. The team ended the first period with six goals to the Scots' one.
Riley Fischer scored first followed closely by
Chris Molnar and
JJ Boos. Custer scored his first of the day with just over five minutes remaining in the period, before Fischer doubled up for the fifth in a row.
Landen Kruse ended the period for the team.
Will Gonia scored twice in the second period, with Boos and Custer each adding their second of the day. The four goals gave the team a 10-1 lead at halftime.
Trine added six more in the third to build on that lead, with three of the goals coming from Custer. Fischer added another along with
Rocco Curatola and
Mitchell Voglewede each tallying their first of the day.
The team added seven more goals in the final period to end the day with the 23-2 victory. Custer and Gonia each added to their totals, before giving way for new options.
Kramer Zastrow scored twice while
Noah Ericson,
Aidan Kubiak and
Connor Ballantyne each netted one.
Custer led the team with six points, all coming on goals. Curatola finished second with four points, including his lone goal and three assists.
Vin Pantano tied for most assists with three as well. Voglewede, Ericson, Ballantyne and
Jackson Bell each added one assist.
Alex Birch led a strong effort at faceoff, posting eight wins on 11 attempts.
Sean Kohloff and
Nick Fariello each added four more. Fariello led the team with four groundballs, with
Patrick Doyle coming in second with three.
Trine improves to 11-1 overall and 1-0 in MIAA play following the victory. They will return home for their next contest, hosting Albion College on Wednesday, April 9. That game is set to start at 7 p.m.
