Scots Top Baseball

ALMA, Mich. – The Trine University baseball team dropped a pair of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association games on Saturday afternoon to the Alma College Scots. The Scots took a run-rule shortened game one 10-0 and rallied in the sixth inning of game two to win 4-1. Trine falls to 10-26 (4-14 MIAA), the Scots are now 18-17 (10-6 MIAA).
 
The Scots' pitcher had the Thunder's number in game one, allowing just two hits and one walk on 15 strikeouts. Luke Burford was able to extend his hitting streak to seven in game one with a fourth inning single. Joel Walton added another single two at bats later. Preston Henschen earned a walk as the Thunder broke up the perfect game bid in the fourth. Burford reached base again in the sixth on an error and Spencer Rodriguez also reached on a fielder's choice, Burford was out on the play to end the inning. Alma scored two in the first, three in the fourth and five in the fifth to take the win 10-0.
 
Trine struck first in game two, Brody Bond reached on an error and was put into scoring position on a Cole Temple walk. Justin Hamberg singled up the middle to score Bond and give Trine a 1-0 lead. Trine stopped the Scots first scoring opportunity with a 4-3 double play in the bottom of the first. The Thunder were unable to add to their lead and Alma answered in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to take the lead. The Scots scored twice more in the in the eighth to lead 4-1. Trine went down in order in the ninth to end the game.
 
The Thunder fall out of contention for the MIAA Tournament with the losses and will close out their season next weekend against Olivet. Trine hosts game one on Friday at 4 p.m. and will travel to Olivet on Sunday for the final pair against the Comets.
