HOLLAND, Mich. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team held Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) leading Hope College to a conference season low eight goals but ultimately fell in the contest after scoring five goals of their own.
It was the Thunder that struck first with senior Collin Custer scoring a pair of goals in the first period. The first came just three minutes after opening faceoff with the second coming five minutes before the first break. The team took the 2-0 lead into the second quarter, but the Flying Dutch scored the next three goals to take a lead of their own. Custer finished off a first-half hat trick, knotting the game at 3-3 for halftime.
Hope pulled away in the third period, scoring four goals to just one by the Thunder. Will Gonia scored the goal for Trine with Vin Pantano adding an assist.
Neither team scored through much of the fourth quarter, but hope made the score 8-4 with 3:11 remaining in the contest. JJ Boos answered in the final minute to give the final score of 8-5.
Defensively, the Thunder were led by Justin Scheberle who finished the game with four caused turnovers and four groundballs. Zachary Norris led the team with six groundballs while adding three more caused turnovers. Danny Kelly also finished with three caused turnovers.
In net, Luke Arnold finished the game with eight saves and a strong outing despite finishing with he loss.
The Thunder fall to 11-5 overall and 1-4 in MIAA play following the loss. They will finish off the regular season when they host Kalamazoo College on Wednesday, April 23. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
