Men's Lacrosse Swats Kalamazoo

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team ended the regular season with a 10-4 victory over visiting Kalamazoo College.

The defenses dominated the opening period, with neither team scoring in the first eight minutes of play. Eventually the Thunder struck first with Vin Pantano coming up with the goal with 7:33 remaining in the quarter. Two minutes later Collin Custer followed up with his own goal to make the lead 2-0.

The final two goals of the stanza went to the visitors and tied the game for the first break.

Trine pulled away in the second quarter, scoring four unanswered goals. Will Gonia came up with the first with the team up a man due to a Hornets' penalty. Mitchell Voglewede added another with just under six minutes remaining. Rocco Curatola and Kramer Zastrow added assists on the tallies. JJ Boos scored two goals at the end of the half to build the lead to 6-2 at the half.

Out of the intermission, Kalamazoo scored first cutting the lead to 6-3 with 6:43 remaining in the quarter. Danny Kelly came up with the groundball after the ensuing faceoff and went from midfield to the crease before scoring the unassisted answer. Custer added his second goal of the game two minutes later with Zastrow adding an assist.

Custer scored again just into the fourth and Boos finished the scoring for the team at the halfway point of the final period. The Hornets scored the final goal to make the final score 10-4.

Defensively, Justin Scheberle led the way for the team, recording a team high two caused turnovers and five groundballs. Zachary Norris and Mason Levin each joined him with five groundballs.

In goal, Luke Arnold played most of the contest and finished with eight saves and the win.

Trine finishes the regular season with a 12-5 overall record having gone 2-4 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. They will enter the upcoming MIAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament as the fifth seed. They will travel to face Calvin University on Saturday, April 26 for the opening round. The time of that game is yet to be announced.
