Knights Last Second Goal Ends Comeback Bid by Thunder

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team erased a four-goal deficit, but a last second goal for Calvin University handed the Thunder a 13-12 loss.

The Thunder struck first in the contest, with Mitchell Voglewede netting a goal in the second minute of the contest to take a 1-0 lead. The rest of the period went in favor of the Knights, who scored five goals to take a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.

Kramer Zastrow and Collin Custer cut the deficit back to two with a goal each to start the second period. But the last goal of the half went to the home team who took a 6-3 lead into halftime.

Calvin made it 7-3 out of the intermission, but the Thunder's comeback started just 30 seconds later. Custer scored two straight and ultimately the team outscored the Knights 6-3 in the period to tie the game a nine for the start of the third. JJ Boos scored twice while Chris Molnar and Rocco Curatola each added one.

Trine retook the lead in the fourth minute of the final stanza, with Molnar scoring an unassisted attempt. Over the first ten minutes of the period the two teams traded goals, with Landen Kruse scoring for the Thunder.

Then just inside of five minutes remaining Calvin took the lead again at 12-11. A late penalty against the home team gave the Thunder an extra man opportunity that they capitalized on to tie the game again with just 1:21 remaining. Xavier Huber netted that goal.

It looked like the Thunder would force overtime after a turnover in the waning seconds, but Knights caused one of their own and got the transition goal to secure the win with just two seconds remaining on the clock.

Trine falls to 11-3 overall and 1-2 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play. They will look to bounce back when they host Adrian College on Tuesday, April 15. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
