GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Trine University Baseball team dropped both games of a double header this afternoon to Calvin. Trine lost 7-5 and 6-5 and are now 9-18 (3-8 MIAA) Calvin is 16-11 (9-2 MIAA).
In game one, Trine fell 7-5. Calvin walked in
Cole Schmidthuber to spot the visitors a 1-0 advantage in the third, the Knights scored the next six to take a 6-1 lead into the fifth. Trine scored again in the fifth on a bases loaded hit by pitch that brought in
William Taczak. Calvin scored a final run in the bottom of the fifth.
Steven Kessinger and
Henry Williams closed out the game on the mound and did not allow a run to keep Trine in striking distance.
Joel Walton hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score Schmidthuber, Temple added a left field bomb in the seventh and Taczak notched an RBI single in the eighth. Trine was not able to find anymore offense in the ninth and came up short, 7-5.
Trine got the bats going early in game two.
Nathan Gilmet scored
Luke Burford on a first inning sac fly. Burford then hit a single that advanced
Brody Bond to third who then scored on a throwing error.
Cole Schmidthuber scored on a sac bunt from
Tyler Wise and Trine rounded out their second inning scoring with an RBI double by
Joel Walton that scored Burford. Trine led 4-1.
Will Gimbel was effective on the mound, striking out six in eight innings of work and allowing four earned runs to his offense's five. Trine added their fifth run on a Calvin error in the seventh. Trine led 5-2 in the ninth but Calvin tied the game and forced extra innings and would ultimately win the game in the 11
th on an RBI double.
Trine will host Adrian tomorrow in a make up of the game originally scheduled for Wednesday, that game will start at 1:00 p.m.
