Thunder Ground Stars and Eagles on Last Day in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Trine University softball team finished off their spring break slate of games with two more quality wins in Florida. Both Dominican (Ill.) University and Husson University were members of the 2024 NCAA Division III Softball Championship field, and both fell to the Thunder.

The day opened with a shortened contest against the Stars, with Trine coming out on top 12-1 in five innings. Tyra Marcum was the top offensive threat in the contest, ending the game 3-for-3 with four RBIs. She had a double and a homer in the contest. Just behind her in both the lineup and production was Debbie Hill who finished the game with three RBIs on two hits, one of which went over the fence.

Marcum and Hill both brought in their first runs in the first inning, with Macy Rocha adding two more after the duo for a 4-0 lead. A double steal and Emma Lee brought in runs in the second to build the lead to 6-0.

Marcum's three-run homer in the fourth put the game on in run-rule territory. Talisa Chafey and Hill each brought in more runs, Hill on a two-run homer, to make the score 12-0 for the bottom of the fifth.

Lauren Clausen went nearly the whole game without a major marring of her stat line, but the Stars did get one run in the fifth to make the score final at 12-1. Clausen finished the game allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out five in the contest, which was her fourth win of the season so far.

The second game of the day was much less explosive, ending just 2-0 in favor of the Thunder. After a quiet first inning, the Eagles' pitching struggled in the second, walking the bases loaded and then walking Ainsley Phillips for an RBI and a 1-0 lead in favor of Trine. In the fifth, Karley Trine led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Lee recorded the RBI single later in the inning to make the score 2-0.

It was enough for the win Alexis Michon in the circle. The senior allowed just four hits while striking out six in the shutout victory. She needed just 65 pitches in the seven inning contest as she picked up her fifth win of the season.

The Thunder will return home with a 10-4 record. After an extended break they are scheduled to hope the home portion of their schedule on Thursday, March 20 against Ohio Northern University. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
