ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University softball team dominated their home opening doubleheader against Ohio Northern University, winning both games in five-inning run-rule fashion. Alexis Michon recorded the fourth perfect game in program history to win the first game and Debbie Hill hit two long balls in the second to lead the offense.
The first game was all Thunder to start to finish. On the mound Michon was perfect. She finished her five innings of work with seven strikeouts and the perfect game.
At the plate Trine scored a pair of runs in the first before exploding for ten in the second inning to build the impressive 12-0 lead. They added two more in the fourth to let the game go final at 14-0 in five innings.
Macy Rocha and Tyra Marcum led the team with three RBIs each. Rocha went three-for-three to get the runs, while Marcum came up with a bases clearing triple, the first of her career. Whitney Duell went three-for-four in the game and finished with two RBIs of her own. Also finishing with two was Michaela Doiron who brought both in at her one at-bat after relieving Marcum at first base.
Hill pitched the second game for the Thunder, and after a rocky first inning, settled in for a respectable win in the circle. She finished the game allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while recording five strikeouts.
The sophomore helped herself at the plate, recording a pair of homers despite a stiff wind blowing in from center field. Her first came in the first inning, giving the team the 3-2 lead after the rough top half. She came up with her second in the fourth inning, putting the team one run from the run-rule victory.
Emma Lee also came up with a homer, but in rarer fashion. With a pair of runners on in the bottom of the third, she hit a line drive that dropped in front of the centerfielder. The Polar Bear defender, desperate to keep the game close made a diving effort for the ball, which then took a huge bounce over her prone form. The ball ended up at the wall and Lee easily reached home for the inside-the-park home run.
The only other RBI of the game went to Karley Trine who had a double in the fourth inning. In addition, her sharply hit ball in the fifth led to the final run of the game, but didn't result in an RBI due to an error by Ohio Northern.
The nationally-ranked Thunder improve to 12-4 after the pair of wins. The team hits the road for a weekend trip with games on Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23. They first head to Illinois Wesleyan University and Inspiration Field, site of the upcoming 2025 NCAA Division III Softball Championship finals. The doubleheader is scheduled to start noon CT / 1 p.m. ET.
