Men's Track and Field Earns 10 All-MIAA Selections

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced their Men's Track and Field All-MIAA selections and Most Valuable Performers from Saturday's MIAA Championships. Trine earned three first-team and seven second-team performers. Trine captured its sixth consecutive MIAA Indoor Championship and 10th consecutive MIAA Championship.
 
Ethan Spahr earned two first and two second team awards while also securing Field Event MVP honors. Spahr scored 36 points, all in field events. He started with first-team honors in the long jump, setting a new personal best of 7.01 meters/23'. He secured his second first-team award with a win in the pole vault, clearing 4.46 meters/14' 7.5". Spahr earned second-team awards in the triple jump with a hop, skip, and jump of 13.41 meters/44' and high jump with a clearance of 1.96 meters/6' 5". His 36 points are the most by a male athlete in an Indoor MIAA Championship Meet.
 
Zion Jackson was equally impressive, tallying 27 points. He took gold in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.37 seconds for first-team honors. He completed the 1-2 sweep in the long jump with a 6.96 meter/22' 10" leap. He added a 3rd place finish in the triple jump and a 6th place finish in the 200.
 
Max Van Huis continued his dominant season with two wins in two events. First he claimed the mile run with a last lap pass to finish in 4:15.20. Then he out kicked the field in the 3000-meter run to take the win in 8:37.98.
 
The Distance Medley Relay team of Matt Hoop, Blane Johnson, Drew Merritt, and Clay Batio earned second-team honors with a second place finish in 10:51.26.
 
Joseph Packard was second in the 5000-meter run finishing in 15:15.05.
 
Trine has four individuals in the top 50 nationally. Spahr is 14th in the heptathlon, Jackson is 48th in the 60-meter hurdles, and Van Huis is 26th in the 5000-meter run and 31st in the 3000-meter run.
Trine will send a small group of athletes to the Wartburg Final Qualifier on Saturday for one final chance to set national qualifying marks. The top 22 individuals and 12 relays will qualify for the NCAA Championships on March 14th-15th.
