Thunder Sweep First Day in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Trine University softball team picked up two victories on their first day in Florida, which signals the beginning of the second half of their spring break trip. They opened the day with a come from behind victory over Saint Mary's (Minn.) University before cruising to a convincing win against Bethany Lutheran College.

The Cardinals built an early lead in the opening game of the day, bringing in two runs in the first inning and then another in the third. The Thunder, on the other hand, struggled to find success in the batters' box, recording just three hits in the first six innings.

In the bottom of the seventh with just three outs separating the team from their fourth loss of the season, that changed. Tyra Marcum led off the inning with a single, which was followed by Debbie Hill being hit by pitch. After a walk for Emma Lee loaded the bases for Emma Beyer. The senior shortstop brought in three runs with her single, tying the game with just one out on the board. Kennedy Huckeby followed up with a pinch hit, walk-off single for the 4-3 victory.

Alexis Michon pitched the game for Trine and earned the win. She allowed the three runs off six hits and one walk while striking out three.

Game two of the day came against the Vikings and the Thunder struck first this time. Hill doubled in the first inning for the 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Lee and Beyer each recorded RBI singles to build that lead to 3-0.

The first mar against Lauren Clausen came in the bottom of the third. The senior pitched all seven innings and ultimately allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out four.

The Thunder had a big inning on offense in both the fifth and seventh innings, posting five runs in each to build their final 13-2 lead. Karley Trine and Hill each had two-RBI homeruns in the fifth while Talisa Chafey brought in the fifth score on a sacrifice fly.

Whitney Duell and Karley Trine each brought in one run in the seventh. Hill then finished the scoring with a second homerun, this time scoring three. She finished the game with six RBIs on three hits.

Trine improves to 5-3 overall following the pair of wins. They will continue their season tomorrow, Thursday, March 6, when they face Moravian University at 9 a.m. and Allegheny College at 11:15 a.m.
