Men's Lacrosse Octuples Pioneers

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team dominated their lone spring break contest, defeating their hosts from Alfred State University by the score of 24-3. Six members of the team recorded four or more points in the contest, with Noah Ericson leading the way with six.

The Thunder offense came out booming on all cylinders. They scored nine goals in the first period. Connor Ballantyne struck first, followed by Rocco Curatola, Collin Custer and Will Gonia who had the eventual game winner. JJ Boos was the fifth member of the team to score in the period, with the rest of the goals coming a previous scorer. Gonia had a hat trick in the first quarter alone.

Ericson started his scoring in the second, notching the first three goals for a hat trick of his own. Mitchel Voglewede scored the other goal of the period for the Thunder who, after one goal from the Pioneers, took a 13-1 lead into halftime.

Gonia scored two more goals in the third period to lead the team, he ended the day with five goals to finish second in points and first in goals for Trine. Xavier Huber, Quinn Rainey and Kramer Zastrow were the other new goal scorers in the period, while Curatola, Custer and Voglewede added to their totals.

Trine finished their scoring with three goals in the fourth. Voglewede and Ericson each added to their totals, while Jackson Bell scored his only goal of the day in the period.

Ericson finished the game with four goals and two assists to tally the high six points. Curatola and Voglewede each finished the game with three goals and an assist for four points. Custer and Ballantyne had the same total but with two goals and two assists.

The team dominated the faceoff circle going 25 for 29. Sean Kohloff was perfect in nine chances, while Alex Birch and Nick Fariello each had seven wins. Kohloff also led the team with six groundballs, with Fariello and J'Oshua Shaw finishing second on the team with four each.

The Thunder improve to 5-0 following the victory. The team will return home for their next game when they host Carroll (Wis.) University on Wednesday, March 12. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
