ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team dominated the first half on their way to a 15-3 victory over visiting Carroll (Wis.) University. Collin Custer led the way offensively in the contest, finishing with five points.
The Thunder score five straight goals to start the game, building a 5-0 lead. JJ Boos opened the scoring followed closely by Vin Pantano and Rocco Curatola. Kramer Zastrow with just under seven minutes left in the quarter and Custer recorded his first of the night two minutes later. Boos bookended the period with a goal just outside of the one-minute mark.
The star of the second quarter was Will Gonia who tallied a hat trick in just the 15 minutes. He scored his first in the second minute before scoring twice in the final minute of the half. Custer added a second while Mitchell Voglewede and Zachary Norris added their first. Norris's goal was a coast-to-coast affair, that started with a caused turnover by the senior long stick.
The scoring slowed in the second half. Just Zastrow and Custer scored goals in the third building the teams lead to 14-3. Xavier Huber scored the lone goal of the fourth quarter to make the score final at 15-3.
Custer finished with three goals and two assists, leading the team in each category. Pantano and Noah Ericson both had two assists in the contest.
Defensively Norris led the team with tree caused turnover while also turning in four groundballs, tied for second. Sean Kohloff led the team with 12 groundballs and J'Oshua Shaw also finished with four. Kohloff led the team with 15 faceoff wins, on 17 attempts.
Zade Gawrys started the game and played 30 minutes in goal. He finished with two saves and the win. Luke Arnold played most of the second half and also finished with two saves.
The Thunder improve to 6-0 overall after the win. They will continue their home stand when they host the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday, March 15. That game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. inside of Zollner Stadium.
