AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Trine University Baseball team defeated the Bluffton Beavers in walk-off fashion on Wednesday morning. Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, Trine scored on a fielding error to cut the lead to one.
Nathan Gilmet provided the walk-off down the left field line to score
Kyle Martin and
Justin Hamberg. Trine is now 3-4 while the Beavers fall to 1-4.
Joseph Closson got the start and went 5 innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run while fanning five.
Cole Clements got the win, throwing 2.1 perfect innings with three strikeouts. Gilmet led the offense with three hits and two RBIs,
Noah Prewitt added three more hits.
Bluffton struck first in the second, scoring on a wild pitch.
Cole Schmidthuber answered with a single in the fourth, Gilmet scored, and Prewitt scored on an errant throw. Bluffton tied the game in the sixth on a ground-rule double. In the seventh Bluffton took the lead on a single and a sac fly. Backs against the wall in the bottom of the ninth, Trine had the bases loaded with two outs. Temple reached on an error by the third baseman and
Luke Burford scored. In the next at bat, Gilmet singled down the left field line and scored Martin and Hamberg for the win in walk-off fashion.
Trine will play Northland tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
