AUBURNDALE, Ind. – The Trine University Baseball team defeated Northland College in dominant fashion this afternoon, 17-1.
Cole Temple put on a clinic in the batter's box, nailing two triples and hitting a fifth inning home run to tally 8 RBIs.
Evan Shoppell got the win, going five innings and allowing just four hits. Trine is now 4-4, Northland falls to 0-6.
Trine started quick, Temple's first trip to the batter's box resulted in a two RBI triple that scored
Max Hoogeveen and
Tyler Wise.
Preston Henschen singled in the next at bat to score Temple. Henschen then stole second to set up a scoring opportunity for
Kyle Martin. He capitalized with a single up the middle. Trine led 4-0 at the end of the first.
In the fourth,
Cole Schmidthuber was walked and then stole second. Wise bunted down the third base line, and Schmidthuber scored. Hoogeveen singled in the next at bat to score Burford. Temple was up again, one upping his previous appearance, clearing the bases with a three RBI triple. Henschen scored Temple with a ground out to second. The Thunder led 10-0 after four.
Temple was back up in the fifth with
Justin Hamberg and Wise on base. He again cleared the bases with a left field bomb. Henschen scored from first on a Martin double to centerfield. Trine led 14-0. Northland broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single.
Trine closed the scoring in the sixth with three more runs. Burford scored on a passed ball.
Charlie West added an RBI triple of his own to score
Cole Clements. West scored on a
Sam Beckham sac fly.
Trine tallied 15 hits, six extra base hits, and four stolen bases. Trine plays North Central (Minn.) in a double header tomorrow starting at 11:00 a.m.
