Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Thunder Tame Tigers on Senior Night

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team picked up their tenth win of the season with a senior night victory over visiting Wittenberg University by the score of 14-7. The team dominated the first half before playing a back-and-forth second.

The Thunder had a balanced and highly effective offensive effort in the first half, scoring seven goals from four different student-athletes. Collin Custer scored the first in the fourth minute of the game and then followed up two minutes later with the second. Will Gonia rounded out the first quarter with an unassisted goal with just under seven minutes remaining.

JJ Boos led off the second to give the team a 4-0 lead with 13:41 on the clock. Vin Pantano broke up a defensive stalemate though the next four minutes with his only goal of the day. Gonia and Custer finished out the half to give the team a commanding 7-0 lead.

More important than the offensive effort was the ridiculous effort in goal from Luke Arnold. He finished the first half with seven saves, including three incredible sequences of back-to-back stops. He ultimately finished the game with nine saves and the win.

To their credit, the Tigers didn't go quietly in the contest. They came out o the attack scoring in the opening minute of the period to cut into the lead. They would eventually score seven goals in the second half, but the Thunder answered each with one of their own.

Rocco Curatola just beat the shot clock for his goal in the third period avoiding a turnover by just over a second. Boos followed up just over a minute later with his second of the day. Riley Fischer and Mitchell Voglewede finished off the scoring in the period over the final three minutes.

Boos and Voglewede each scored again in the fourth with Chris Molnar adding his first.

Three members of the team finished with three points. Custer and Boos each did it with goals, while Xavier Huber finished with three assists. Kramer Zastrow was second on the team with two assists.

Defensively, Zachary Norris and Danny Kelly each led the team with three caused turnovers. Mason Kaufman led the team with five groundballs with Kelly and Justin Scheberle coming in with four.

The Thunder finish the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 10-1 record. They will next take the field when they face Alma College on Saturday, April 5. The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opener is set to start at 1 p.m.
