ANGOLA, Ind. – The 2023-2024 Trine University Men's Basketball National Championship team will be honored in Indianapolis during tonight's NCAA Men's Tournament Sweet 16 contest between the University of Tennessee and the University of Kentucky. The game will be broadcast on TBS and truTV and is set to tipoff at 7:39 P.M.
The 23-24 team made the program's first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament a season ago. After a 22-3 regular season that saw Trine claim the MIAA Regular Season Championship the Thunder earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. After defeating Fontbonne and Coe in the first two rounds the Thunder remained home for the second weekend. In the Sweet 16, Trine toppled Washington (Mo.) to set up what became an instant classic against Wisconsin-Platteville. Trine erased a 10 point deficit over the final two minutes to force overtime. Trine led for most of the extra period, but it was
Cortez Garland who broke the tie as time expired the send Trine to the Final Four. The Thunder then knocked off Trinity (Conn.) to advance to the national championship game against #1 Hampden Sydney. Four Thunder scored in double figures, including 22 from Garland as Trine captured it's first men's basketball national title. Garland was named MVP of the Tournament.
