Pete Smith Returns to Trine as Assistant Coach

ANGOLA, Ind. – Head Men's Basketball Coach Jon VanderWal has announced the addition of Pete Smith to the Trine University Men's Basketball coaching staff. Smith returns to Trine where he played for two seasons from 2017-19.

Coach VanderWal on adding Smith to the staff: "I'm extremely excited to welcome Pete Smith to our staff at Trine University. Pete is a rising star in the coaching profession and did an outstanding job with us at Marietta. His familiarity with me and with Trine, combined with his strong recruiting and coaching ties across Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, make him a perfect fit for our program."
 
Smith worked with Coach VanderWal last season at Marietta College, where he served as the recruiting coordinator and camp director. Prior to his time with the Pioneers, Smith served as the Assistant Coach at Adrian College in the same role. Smith primarily worked as the recruiting coordinator and directed player development. His other duties included scouting and film review with athletes to further foster development.
 
In his playing career, Smith was twice named All-MIAA and was the MIAA MVP in 2019. He also earned All Region honors from the NABC and D3hoops in his senior campaign. Despite playing just 53 games for the Thunder, Smith is one of th best three point shooters in program history, he ranks 5th all-time in made three pointers (169) and second in three point percentage (42.3%). Smith also ranks in the top 10 in program history in assists, assists per game, steals per game, and minutes per game.
