ANDERSON, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team picked up another convincing win, defeating their hosts from Anderson (Ind.) University by the score of 18-2. Collin Custer led the way offensively for the team with five points.
Custer opened the scoring in the first minute of the game, starting a run of 15 unanswered goals that would last through the third quarter, with nine coming in the first period alone. Joining the senior with goals in the first were Rocco Curatola, Landen Kruse, JJ Boos, Xavier Huber, J'Oshua Shaw and Mitchell Voglewede. Custer and Boos each finished with two goals.
The second saw three goals for Trine with Kramer Zastrow and Connor Ballantyne each netting their first while Boos added his second of the day. The team took a 12-0 lead into halftime.
Three more goals went to the Thunder in the third to finish the 15-0 run. Colby Springer and Riley Fischer were the newcomers to the scoresheet while Custer added his third of the game.
The Ravens put themselves on the board in the opening minutes of the fourth, scoring two goals. Will Gonia, Noah Ericson and Custer responded for Trine to build the final 18-2 lead.
Custer finished the game with a team high of five points including four goals and an assist. Boos finished second on the team with three goals and Ericson led the team with two assists while also finishing with three points.
The Thunder finished with 17 caused turnovers in the contest, spread among 13 different student-athletes. Leading the way were Zade Gawrys, Mitchell Voglewede, Jackson Bell and Danny Kelly who each had a pair. Kelly and Shaw led the team with four groundballs each.
Four different goalies saw play for the Thunder. Gawrys made the start and earned the win. Luke Arnold played the second quarter and finished with one save. Gavin Phetteplace led the team with five saves while playing the third period. Evan Dobyns finished off the game, making three saves but allowing the two goals.
The Thunder improve to 9-1 following the lopsided victory. They will continue their season when they return home to host Wittenberg University on Saturday, March 29. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
