Men's Volleyball Squashes Little Giants

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University Men's Volleyball team claimed a five set victory tonight inside Hershey Hall over the Wabash Little Giants. Kevin Boncaro sent home 25 kills and Karl Both added 8 kills and 5 blocks. Ryan McDonald dished out 45 assists. Trine is now 12-5 (2-0 MCVL) and Wabash falls to 12-7 (1-2 MCVL).
 
Trine hit .360 for the match and hit better than .300 in four of five. The Thunder committed just 13 attacking errors to 58 kills. Trine served up eight aces.
 
Sets 1 and 2 were all Thunder, Trine hit .500 and .474 in the two frames. Boncaro peppered the Little Giants in set one with five kills and an ace. Trine forced six Wabash attacking errors and five service errors as they cruised to a 25-13 win. Set two was more of the same, Trine tallied 10 kills and three aces and benefitted from 12 Little Giant errors.


Trine looked set to sweep the Little Giants but 8 kills from Bawibawi Thang would turn the tide for Wabash in set three, the visitors ground out an overtime win in the set and carried that momentum into set four. Trine trailed 21-14 in set four but clawed back to tie it four times at 23, 24, 25, and 26. Boncaro led the comeback with seven kills. Wabash would take the set 28-26 to force the decisive fifth set.
 
In set five Trine jumped out to a 6-3 lead with two kills from Carter Steffgen. Wabash took an 8-7 lead as the teams switched sides. Trine scored four of the next five to take a 10-8 lead they would not relinquish. Boncaro, Steffgen, and Both made the final five kills to wrap up the five set win, 15-12.
 
Trine heads to eastern Ohio next week for MCVL matchups at Baldwin Wallace and Mount Union. Trine plays the Yellow Jackets on Friday and the Purple Raiders on Saturday.
