ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's lacrosse team extended their winning streak to seven with a 9-3 victory over the visiting Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). The Thunder had a dominating third period performance to earn the win, after the first half saw the teams in a virtual stalemate.
Colin Custer opened the game with the first goal, just 47 seconds into the contest. The defenses settled in for the next four minutes, before the Raiders scored back-to-back on either side of the ten minute mark. Will Gonia ended the period in a tie with a man up goal in the final three minutes.
Custer scored again to start the second period and make the score 3-2. But the back-and-forth continued with MSOE scoring to tie the game at three with nine minutes remaining in the half. Chris Molnar handed the team another lead at 4-3, which ultimately held into the intermission.
The Raiders came out of the intermission on a mission, recording three shots on goal in the first 90 seconds. Luke Arnold, who had just entered the game in goal for the Thunder, stood on his head during the stretch, keeping the Thunder up. In fact, the sophomore allowed no goals in his 30 minutes of play. He earned the win for his six-save performance.
Seemingly galvanized by the defensive effort the Trine offense pulled away. The team scored four goals in the third, including three in the final four minutes. JJ Boos scored the first with just under 12 minutes left, before Gonia scored twice in the 12th and 13th minutes. Mitchell Voglewede finished the stretch with his lone goal of the contest.
Gonia finished his day with four, scoring the lone goal of the fourth period, to give the team their final win of 9-3. The junior led the team in both goals and points with the four. Rocco Curatola and Vin Pantano each finished with a pair of assists to pace the team.
The Thunder finish the day 7-0. They will continue their season when they host Oberlin College on Wednesday, March 19. That game is now scheduled for 5 p.m.
