Marian Stalls Women's Hockey

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University women's hockey team dropped the second half of the weekend doubleheader against Marian (Wis.) University, falling 3-1 to the visitors.

The Sabres struck first in the contest, scoring in the tenth minute of the opening period to take the early 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later a pair of penalties on the visitors gave the Thunder a 5-on-3 opportunity that they converted into a tying goal. Running the power-play offense found Hannah Lambers and Emma-Lyn Stephenson passing the puck back-and-forth at the point, ending with Lambers firing a shot from the top of the near faceoff circle. The attempt was heading wide of the net, but Payton Hans drove to the net from the far circle and tipped the puck home.

Marian added two more goals in the second period, the second coming on a 5-on-3 chance of their own. The 3-1 lead was too much for the home squad, even with nearly two minutes of empty net play at the end of the third period.

Annie Kindseth played another strong game in net for the team despite allowing the three goals. She finished the game with 34 more saves to her freshman year total.

The Thunder fall to 8-13-2 overall and 5-9-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They are currently in a battle for positioning in the standings ahead of the upcoming Slaats Cup Playoffs. With results still outstanding for the day, Trine sits seventh in the league table, with the top-eight reaching postseason.

The team will finish the regular season with a home-and-home series against Adrian College. The Bulldogs will play hosts on Friday, February 14 before coming to Angola for Saturday's contest. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
