ANGOLA, Ind. – The #12 Trine University Women's Basketball team posted their eleventh straight win on Saturday afternoon with an 80-61 decision over Alma. Four Thunder scored in double figures and
Sidney Wagner led the way with 23 points. Trine is now 19-2 (12-0 MIAA) Alma falls to 10-12 (7-6 MIAA).
Four was the number of the day for the Thunder. Four players scored in double figures; Trine outscored Alma in all four quarters.
Jada Rhonehouse,
Sierra Hinds and
Katie Tate each made four field goals, Hinds added four rebounds.
Erin Sherwood added four more rebounds and a quartet of steals, while Wagner also added four rebounds and dished out four assists. She even picked up four fouls.
Trine broke a 4-4 tie with a 10-0 run midway through the first quarter. Sherwood started it at the free throw line, then Hinds scored two down low and
Allison Capouch and Wagner finished it off from downtown, each knocking in a triple. Tate assisted on Wagner's long ball, her first of seven on the day. Alma fought back to trail 20-19 at the end of the first quarter.
Trine quickly stretched the lead to eight to open the second frame. The Thunder offense then went cold and Alma was able to take a 35-33 lead inside two minutes to go. Trine got to the free throw line to regain the lead and
Jada Rhonehouse dashed through the lane with 19 seconds left to give the Thunder a 38-35 lead at the break.
Big third quarters have been a theme of the season for Trine and today was no different. Trine outscored Alma 25-11. Trine scored 15 third quarter points in transition with six coming off turnovers. Wagner got a steal and assisted Rhonehouse on a layup, then she scored four in a row before assisting Tate on another layup. It was Tate's turn from there, assisting on three consecutive made baskets. Sherwood made the first two before Wagner buried a dagger from deep to give Trine a 21 point lead.
Alma cut the lead to 11 in the fourth quarter, Trine quickly responded by extending it right back to 21 with just under two minutes remaining.
The Thunder close out their three game homestand on Wednesday night against Adrian before heading to #15 Hope on Saturday for a game the will likely decide who hosts the MIAA Tournament.
