Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

#7 Men's Hockey Stunned by Sabres

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Trine University men's hockey team, ranked seventh in both national polls, lost a heartbreaker to their hosts from Marian (Wis.) University. A last second goal gave the home side the 5-4 upset victory.

Neither team scored in the first period which was short on offense for both teams. The Sabres won the battle of shots on goal, but just barely, recording seven to the Thunder's five.

Trine came out firing in the second period scoring a pair of goals in the first five minutes and ultimately outshooting the opposition 11-2. Sam Antenucci led the effort, assisting on the first goal before scoring the second. Logan Furstenau scored the opening salvo. Kyle Watson added an assist to the second tally.

Despite the lopsided start to the period and final shots on goal tally, Marian made their chances count. Both of their shots struck true, the first in the tenth minute, aided by a power-play opportunity, and the second in 14th minute. The game went to the second intermission tied 2-2.

The Sabres took their first lead of the game in the fifth minute of the final stanza, before the Thunder's Bobby Price knotted the game in the eighth minute. Watson along with Tyler Blanchard had assists on the goal. It was a short-lived stalemate with the home team retaking the lead just 39 seconds later.

Josh Wright, with assists from Drew Welsch and Antenucci, scored another equalizer in the 12th minute of the period. The 4-4 score lasted into the final seconds of the game, which seemed destined to head to overtime, but the Sabres had one last shot in store. The home side scored with just ten seconds left on the clock to win 5-4.

Trine falls to 16-5-1 overall and 10-4-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play after the loss. They will look to bounce back tomorrow, Sunday, February 9 with their second game against Marian. Opening puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT / 4 p.m. ET.
